Comprehensive Network Monitoring
Ipswitch WhatsUp Gold provides detailed monitoring of network availability and performance. Built-in functionality allows users to ping each device as well as check for status of web services, email services and many other critical application services. Monitoring falls into two categories - Active Monitors and Passive Monitors.
Active Monitors
Active Monitors query network services installed on a device, then wait on the response. If a response is not received, or if the response does not match what is expected, the service is considered down, and a state change occurs on the device. If the query is returned with the expected response, the service is considered up.
The following Active Monitor types are available:
- Windows NT Service Monitoring: Keep track of critical application functions, with unlimited Windows service monitoring. Minimize downtime by allowing WhatsUp to restart any failed Windows service automatically.
- SNMP Monitoring SNMP Monitoring: Monitor any SNMP OID you can think of. Track CPU/Memory levels or even the temperature in your server room. Set thresholds to be informed of any abnormal behaviour. SNMP versions 1-3 are supported.
- Application Monitoring: Check the status of individual ports on the network and isolate failures. Go a step further using customisable scripts to communicate with the application using a specified port.
- WMI Monitoring: Understand when reallocation of Windows resources is necessary. Track the utilization levels of critical resources such as cpu, disk space, memory. Know immediately if these or other resources fall outside of acceptable ranges.
Passive Monitors
Some elements on a network may not provide a clear up or down status when queried. For example, a message may get logged to the system's Event log by another application (such as an Anti-Virus application alerting when a virus is found). Since these messages/events can occur at any time, a Passive Monitor Listener "listens" for them, and notifies WhatsUp when they occur.
The Passive Monitors available are:
- SNMP Trap Receiver: Receive SNMP Traps from your network devices to help with troubleshooting and network health assessment.
- Syslog Server: Receive Syslog messages from a network for advanced troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, intrusion detection, and assessing general network health.
- Windows Event Log Monitoring: Identify potential harmful events such as authentication failures or faulty NIC card. Select Windows Event Log items to watch for and immediately alert if necessary.
